NASHVILLE MEMOIR: PHOTOGRAPHS BY GREG MILLER TO OPEN IN CHEEKWOOD’S TEMPORARY CONTEMPORARY GALLERY ON OCTOBER 3

Nashville, TN – On view October 3 until February 22, 2010, photographer Greg Miller’s exhibition Nashville Memoir: Photographs by Greg Miller attempts to reconstruct memories of his childhood. After living in New York for twenty years, Miller returned to his hometown of Nashville to reexamine the city where he grew up. In 2008, Miller began a series of photographs using familiar spaces from his childhood as starting points. Recreating memories by photographing in and around areas of Nashville where he spent a majority of his time, he often photographs complete strangers cast in scenes drawn from the lasting emotional remnants of his past. The opening reception will be held October 22 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Cheekwood’s Frist Learning Center. Gallery remarks by the artist at 6:45 pm.

Greg Miller was born in 1967 in Nashville. His earliest photographic influence was his father, an amateur photographer. As a teenager, Miller studied art with John Ashworth and worked as an assistant to Nashville photographer, Bob Schatz. As a result of their combined efforts, Miller received a full scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in NY and graduated with a BFA in 1990. Since then his work has appeared in such publications as Time, Esquire, People Magazine, Fortune, New York Magazine, Oprah Magazine and many others. Since 2001, he has taught at the International Center of Photography in NY. Miller received a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography in 2008. His work is widely exhibited and collected.
