2-4 YEAR OLDS (Guardian/Child)

TWO HOUR CLASS: Meets Monday-Friday from 9:00-11:00 am in one week increments.
Register for each week separately.


Arty Animals
Campers will learn about a variety of insects and animals at Cheekwood, while creating unique art projects and reading stories. Children will get their hands dirty with paint, collage, clay & more!

Beautiful Books

Inspiration comes from the books we read in this class! From The Very Hungry Caterpillar to Where the Wild Things Are, campers will enjoy re-creating their favorite scenes and characters from these timeless stories!

Mini Masters

Campers will learn about a variety of artists and art forms, from European and American masters, to Modern and Contemporary movements. Children will get their hands dirty with paint, collage, clay & more!

Painting Possibilities

This camp will give your preschooler the opportunity to experience painting in many different and unique ways. With varied projects, textures, and tools –the result will be fabulous works of art!

Things that GO!

Vroom, Vroom! Honk, Honk! Choo, Choo! Make your own transportation-inspired artwork in this class. Campers will read stories, enjoy visiting the TRAINS display, and create interesting art projects.

ABCs for Me!
Join us as we create our own alphabet artwork! Each day, participants will create unique art projects and read a story. This class is a great way to teach your child their ABCs and interact with different art materials.

Young at ART

Through unique projects designed to stimulate the imagination and creative skills, help your child explore a variety of 2D and 3D techniques including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Enjoy being creative in a group setting, socializing with other children and leaving the mess at Cheekwood!



5-6 YEAR OLDS

*NEW* All About ME! (5-6)
This camp is specifically designed for YOU! Explore the concept of identity inside and out. Going beyond the average self-portrait, campers will create a collection of various projects using different media. Let your child focus on a unique and special subject…themselves!

Bugs & Blooms (5-6)
In this unique class, campers will explore the gardens to find artistic inspiration. After exploring the grounds at Cheekwood, children will venture into the studio to make their own crafts and creatures. Campers will enjoy learning about various insects, plants and bugs in the gardens, before creating beautiful artwork!

Garden Sprouts (5-6)
Time to play in the dirt! In this interactive introduction to the garden, campers will discover soil, seeds, the plant life cycle and the many wonders of the natural world. Through hands-on activities and greenhouse tours, campers will create garden art, conduct science experiments and cultivate a love of nature and gardening.

*NEW* Mighty Masters (5-6)
Campers will learn about a variety of artists and art forms, from Van Gogh and Picasso to Warhol and Chihuly. Children will get their hands dirty with paint, collage, sculpture & more!


Mixed Media Madness (5-6)
Are pencils, paper, and paint the only materials used to create great pieces of art? No way! In this camp, children will create art using many different art ‘ingredients’. Campers will explore a variety of materials and learn new methods and techniques for using everyday objects. No material is off limits!

Model & Mold (5-6)
Explore the exciting world of 2D and 3D art in this fun class! From decorative arts in the Museum of Art to installations in the Botanical Garden, campers will enjoy seeing different sculptures at Cheekwood. Whether sculpting functional objects or imaginary creations, campers will model & mold one-of-a-kind artwork using anything from paper maché to clay. This class is perfect for lego-loving, ‘get your hands dirty’ kids!

*NEW* Monsters, Oh My! (5-6)
This unique class will focus on creating crazy monsters and more! Inspired by story books, each camper will design and build his or her own unique sculptures, transform themselves into goblins and create mixed media monsters. *This class incorporates more clay handbuilding lessons.


Painting Possibilities (5-6)
Is your camper itching to get messy and have some fun? This class explores tempra, watercolor and acrylic paint in a variety of ways. While learning the basics of primary and secondary colors, campers will be encouraged to control their brushwork, mix colors, and have fun! Campers will learn about other painters and discover unique ways to apply paint on different surfaces.

Summer Sampler (5-6)
Over the course of a week, campers will discover a variety of new materials and an exciting assortment of projects. Campers will explore painting, drawing, clay and more. If your child wants to experience the wide world of arts and crafts, this is the class for you! No two sampler classes are alike.

Think! Draw! Create! (5-6)
Bruce Munro, renown light artist & creator of Cheekwood’s summer exhibit, describes his outdoor installations as “sketchbook jottings realized.” This class will use sketchbook doodles to create paintings, explore mixed media, and make a variety projects inspired by other artists, story books, and Cheekwood’s indoor & outdoor exhibitions. Join us for hands-on fun and a variety of art projects!



7-9 YEAR OLDS

Awesome Acrylics (7-9)
Do you love to paint? If so, this is the camp for you! Using acrylics, campers will learn about basic techniques and create fun painting projects. Children will enjoy painting on a variety of different surfaces in addition to traditional canvas.

Clay Creations (7-9)
Campers will discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel. From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures – campers will do it all! No prior experience is necessary.

Dynamic Drawing (7-9)
Do you like to draw? From line and form to texture and shading, this class will explore the basics of drawing and beyond using a variety of different materials and media. Campers will enjoy learning the basics in a fun and active studio and exploring architecture and perspective drawing on-site at Cheekwood’s.

Gardening Adventure (7-9)
Create garden art, conduct science experiments, and cultivate a love of nature and gardening! Campers will discover the wonderful world of gardening at Cheekwood. Students will “dig deeper” to explore summer vegetables, ecosystems, seeds, and plant cycles through hands-on activities and greenhouse tours.

Passport to ART (7-9)
Take a trip around the world in this exciting class. Whether it is Cheekwood’s Japanese Garden or U.K. native Bruce Munro’s exhibition, campers will expand their knowledge of different cultures & artists while creating works of art from all over the globe. Enjoy a wide variety of art making with unique materials!

*NEW* Recyclemania (7-9)
This is no ordinary art camp! Campers will create unique pieces of art while learning about individual environmental responsibility and discovering ways to reuse and repurpose items that are normally thrown away. Projects may include incorporating recyclables and found objects into painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, and mixed media projects.

Simply Charming Jewelry (7-9)
Campers will design their own special charms using materials such as copper, clay, paper and wire. This fun class will focus on design, function, and a deeper understanding of the art. From bracelets and rings to necklaces and earrings – no accessory is off limits!

Studio FUNdamentals (7-9)
Over the course of a week, campers will work with a variety of materials as they discover a wide array of studio arts. Exploring both 2D & 3D processes, projects will include drawing, painting, sculpting and working with clay. Each week will vary in theme to encourage students to discover fun new ways of expressing their creativity!

Think! Draw! Create! (7-9)

Wearable Art (7-9)
Create your own style! Campers will enjoy timeless activities like tie-dye, but will also learn new techniques such as felting and stamping. From shirts and hats to bags and other accessories, campers will discover a lot about art making and their own style!


10-12 YEAR OLDS

Clay Creations (10-12)
Campers will discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel. From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures – campers will do it all! No prior experience is necessary.

Intermediate Art (10-12)
From painting with acrylics or watercolors to sculpting in clay or found objects – campers will learn more advanced lessons in both 2D and 3D art. This survey of studio arts will help campers explore the potentials of a variety of materials and methods.

Intermediate Drawing (10-12)
Drawing is the foundation of the visual arts and anyone can learn to draw. In this class students will learn to use line and contour, shape and form, light and shadow, proportion and perspective to create a picture. Students will explore materials and different ways to make drawings.

Interactive Sketchbook (10-12)
Students will create their own mixed media sketchbook as a document of their personal stories, experiences, and thoughts. Campers will enjoy Cheekwood’s beautiful grounds and express themselves through their artwork. Techniques addressed will be pen and ink drawing and observational, watercolor painting, collage, photo transfer, and drawing on-site at Cheekwood.

*NEW* Think! Draw! Create! (10-12)

Join us for sketchbook discoveries that lead to a variety of art projects!

Wearable Art (10-12)
Create your own style! Campers will learn basic sewing skills and new art making techniques such as felting and stamping. From shirts and hats to bags and other accessories, campers will learn about fiber art and develop their own style!


13-18 YEAR OLDS 

*NEW* A Novel Idea : Creative Writing (13-18)
Write a novel this summer! Slay a dragon, escape to the wild, fall in love, break a heart, be the hero or the villain, start an uprising, solve the mystery, and then write, “the end.” Imagine, invent, and create your own commercial-length novel with A Novel Idea and author, Kristen House. You’ll also evict your inner-critic and learn to love stories even more than you already do. Classes meet Monday-Friday from 9:00 am-12:00 pm for 4 weeks, June 3rd-28th. *NEW* A Novel Idea : 1-Week Poetry Camps (13-18)
Developed for writers who want to improve their writing, explore a different genre of writing, and meet other writers, the Workshop sessions are one-week half-day workshops that combine instruction and writing time to maximize your creativity and inspiration. It's pure indulgence for wordy kids! Classes meet Monday- Friday from 9:00 am- 12:00 pm the weeks of July 8-12 OR July 22-26.

Take your clay skills to the next level! Campers will work on more advanced hand building projects and further develop skills for wheel work. Campers will learn more about textures, techniques and glazing than the basic level camps.

*NEW* Studio Art & Illustration (13-16)
Cheekwood’s gardens and grounds are its largest art studio – combining the purest colors and most beautiful lines on one large canvas. Explore your creativity and find your own unique artistic expression as you experiment with illustration, photography, and studio arts. Cheekwood will provide all supplies, but campers are asked to bring their own digital camera to use.
