May 16 Miniatures: In the Service of Sentimentality—Miniature Portraits as ‘Small Remembrances’

As evident in the exhibition Affectionately Yours: American Miniature Portraits and the Stories They Tell, painting portrait miniatures was a widespread professional practice among male and female artists in 18th and 19th c. America. Notices were published in newspapers in which artists offered their “services” in creating “satisfactory likenesses” to all who wished to visit their “painting rooms” and “patronise (sic) this mimic art.” Join us as Dr. Judy Bullington, Chair of the Department of Art at Belmont University, explores the technique and process of creating miniatures, and discusses portraits by notable painters and their subjects within a broader cultural context.  Click here to register.

May 22 Special Artist Lecture: Bruce Munro

Meet internationally acclaimed British artist Bruce Munro and listen as he discusses his work, inspiration and creative process. Join us to discover how each of the iconic installations is a manifestation of memories and experiences collected and curated over the last thirty years and to learn how they came together to create the magical, iridescent landscape that is Light: Bruce Munro at Cheekwood.  Click here to purchase tickets.
