Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence Program
at Cheekwood

About the Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence Program
The Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence program, which began at Cheekwood in the spring of 2012, brings national and international artists to Nashville to create one-of-a-kind pieces at Cheekwood, while allowing artists the opportunity to interact with staff, visitors, and the arts community throughout the creative process. With its renowned gardens and art collections, Cheekwood offers visiting artists a great set of resources to reflect broadly on nature and sustainability within a global art world.

Cheekwood has a tradition of exhibiting modern and contemporary art, most recently with its award winning series Temporary Contemporary which focused on emerging artists from the Southeast. For the residency program, Cheekwood converted several spaces in the Frist Learning Center into a studio and lounge area. This historic part of Cheekwood originally housed the estate’s horse stables and garages. In the late 1990s, the Frist Learning Center was expanded to accommodate an education center and gallery spaces. The Artist-in-Residence program allows Cheekwood to take its commitment to contemporary art to a new level.

About Martin Shallenberger
In June 1971 the artist Martin Shallenberger exhibited 40 paintings at the Tennessee Fine Arts Center (now Cheekwood). Visitors who came to see his paintings at Cheekwood were able to see views from places around the world, including New York, Paris, Florence, Amsterdam, and Cologne. Shallenberger was a world traveler who enjoyed seeing and painting the many sites he visited. He knew that the world of art has no borders. After opening his Cheekwood exhibition, Shallenberger left for a summer residency in Eferding, Austria, where he spent July and August. It is a very fitting tribute to this international artist to name an artist-in-residence program after Martin Shallenberger.
