May 16 Miniatures: In the Service of Sentimentality—Miniature Portraits as ‘Small Remembrances’
As evident in the exhibition Affectionately Yours: American Miniature Portraits and the Stories They Tell, painting portrait miniatures was a widespread professional practice among male and female artists in 18th and 19th c. America. Notices were published in newspapers in which artists offered their “services” in creating “satisfactory likenesses” to all who wished to visit their “painting rooms” and “patronise (sic) this mimic art.” Join us as Dr. Judy Bullington, Chair of the Department of Art at Belmont University, explores the technique and process of creating miniatures, and discusses portraits by notable painters and their subjects within a broader cultural context.
