We’re taking the arts outside! This May, enjoy programs combining art and nature in this new month-long event featuring 10 outdoor art happenings every day and additional happenings throughout the week.

Daily Art Happenings Include:

1. Enjoy weekly demonstrations by Plein Air Painters, including Nashville’s Chestnut Group, in the Wills Perennial Garden. Advanced registration required for demonstrations.

2. Stroll through the larger-than-life sculptures in Sean Kenney’s Nature POP! made of over 800,000 LEGO® Bricks

3. Local artist, Herb Williams, will be creating some sculptural installations using his favorite medium, crayons. Herb Williams will be on-site doing installations made from crayons from 10 AM – 2 PM on select Saturdays in May, including May 1, May 8, and May 15. Locations for each unique installation rotate each Saturday.

4. Our Outdoor Frames showcase some of Cheekwood’s most beautiful vistas for the picture perfect moment!

5. Enjoy an Art Scavenger Hunt throughout the estate. Pick up the guide in Botanic Hall or the Frist Learning Center.

6. Children can pick up a takeaway Art Activity Tote outside the Frist Learning Center art studios to make art at Cheekwood or at home. Available Tuesday – Friday from 10 AM – 12 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 2 PM.

7. Enjoy a self-guided Audio Tour Walk on The Carell Trail. Pick up Audio Tour-Guide in Botanic Hall. There is a $5 charge for the Audio Guide.

8. Take in the newly-conserved Eric Orr’s Cheekwood Prime Matter sculpture where water and fire present a most unique art experience. Each day from 12 PM – 2 PM and Thursday nights from 5 – 9 PM.

9. Make a LEGO® tile to add to the community LEGO® mural. Available Tuesday – Friday from 12 PM – 2 PM, Thursday nights from 5 – 8:30 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM outside the Frist Learning Center art studios.

10. Enjoy the music of a featured instrument amplified throughout the gardens. Click here to learn about different musical instruments, along with the musicians who became famous for playing them. Tuesday – Saturday from 12 PM – 2 PM.

Dates, hours, activities, and capacity are all subject to change based on updated safety protocols and recommendations of the CDC and Mayor John Cooper’s “Roadmap to Reopening Nashville” Plan. Advanced reservations required for all happenings, workshops, and classes. Additional fees may apply. Capacity is limited.

Join us outside as we read nature and art inspired children’s books each week! Please see below for new procedures before attending:

  • Storytime will be held outside on the lawn by the First Horizon Performance Stage.
  • Storytime is weather permitting and will be canceled if raining
  • Bring your own picnic blanket.
  • First come first served, attendance is limited to maintain social distancing on the lawn.
  • See an education team member to be seated.
  • Storytime listeners will be admitted on a rolling basis as spots become available.
  • Masks are required for those attending Storytime.
