Member Spotlight: Esther Cohn

A proud Nashville resident since 1958, Esther Cohn prioritizes family and involvement in her community. Marriage moved her from Texas to Tennessee, where she raised her children and continues to be very active in the local area. Much of Esther’s activity is about Cheekwood, where she has a decades-long membership filled with fond memories. We had a Q&A session with Esther, to learn more about her Cheekwood membership experience.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I have always been an active citizen of Nashville alongside my family, and have done extensive volunteer work in my life, including being a member of the board of the Friends of Cheekwood, a committee headed by my mother-in-law Helen Rosenfeld. Also, my husband’s uncle Albert Werthan was one of the presidents of the Board of Cheekwood. Before moving to Nashville, my family was also active in Houston, Texas.

What inspired you to become a Cheekwood member?

My family has been involved with Cheekwood for so long, that it is hard to remember exactly when my membership started. But I would say it started around the year 1961, which was about one year after Cheekwood opened its doors to the public as a botanical garden in 1960. I think that if you’re a member of the community, it is important to have a place where art, beauty, and culture thrive. Cheekwood is just a treasure in Nashville.

What is your favorite time of year at Cheekwood?

Although I visit Cheekwood year-round, my favorite time of year to enjoy the gardens is the springtime when the tulips in the color garden are at their full bloom.

Which gardens, areas, or plants do you most enjoy when visiting Cheekwood, and why?

Since it opened in 1999, my favorite place to visit on Cheekwood’s grounds is the Ann and Monroe Carell Jr. Family Sculpture Trail. Although I have been on the trail innumerable times, a particularly fond memory is when my husband and I took my husband’s fraternity there on a reunion trip. We saw many of the sights that Nashville has to offer, including the Grand Ole Opry, but the highlight of their trip for us was the Sculpture Trail.

What is one of your favorite memories involving Cheekwood?

My favorite memories from Cheekwood over the years have been attending the Swan Balls. We went for many years. In fact, in 1971, I was asked to be one of what they called the “Swan Ball Beauties,” which meant that it was my job to walk around with raffle tickets and sell them to people sitting at the tables. Many of the amazing workers decorating the Swan Ball and making the event come to life were volunteers in those days. I must have attended 30 or more Swan Balls over the years!

Do you have a favorite piece of art at Cheekwood or a favorite art exhibition Cheekwood has hosted? If so, what is it and what did you like about it?

In addition to the wonderful collection of art pieces on the Sculpture Trail, my favorite exhibition that Cheekwood has ever displayed is artist Dale Chihuly’s masterful glassworks. Seeing those works displayed and lit so beautifully was a treat; and I am so excited to see Bruce Munro’s Light exhibition, because I have heard such great things. I also really love the Jamie Wyeth and Andy Warhol pieces in the mansion museum.

Why do you think Cheekwood is important – for individuals, families, and communities?

The reason my family and I have supported Cheekwood for so many years is because it is such a special gem to have in a community. When I moved here from Houston, which was a more developed city than Nashville in the late 1950’s, Cheekwood was one of the only places at the time where our community could engage artistically. Since then, we have loved experiencing all the artistic enrichment that Cheekwood has to offer, first with our children and then with our grandchildren. It’s a beautiful spot, an oasis with wonderful history.

Why would you encourage others to become Cheekwood members?

I personally feel that if you're a member of a community, that it is amazing to support the wonderful things that the community has to offer. Cheekwood is just a Nashville treasure, and I would encourage people to support it just because of the joy that they would derive from visiting and taking in its natural and artistic brilliance.

Join Cheekwood today and experience the unrivaled beauty of Nashville’s landmark country estate. Members can enjoy inspiring art and garden exhibitions, family activities, programming for all ages, world-class music events, and year-round festivals celebrating the four seasons.

Member Spotlight: Eileen Tomson

We came to Nashville in the mid 90’s from Los Angeles. I am an illustrator of stationery design, and an abstract painter. Coming from sunny California where the weather at that time was glorious most of the year, we loved the different seasons that Nashville offered with the beautiful gardens and nature surrounding us, which brought us to the beauty of Cheekwood.
Eileen Tomson | Cheekwood Member since 1995

Eileen Tomson is passionate about Cheekwood, as we learned when she stopped by to share her enthusiasm during a Member Appreciation Day event. She commented that “Cheekwood is minutes away from our home and we enjoy the grounds with friends and their children. Now with the new Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden, it is even more exciting to stroll around and see the turtles, the well-designed train express; and seeing other young children finding their joy with what Cheekwood brings to all of us.” This brief conversation piqued our interest and following our visit, we reached out to Eileen to learn more about her membership experience.

What inspired you to become a Cheekwood member?

When I saw all the various programs, art and music that Cheekwood has to offer I was very excited to become a member with all those benefits. I love to walk the sculpture trail, meet friends for Thursday Night Out, and bring out-of-state friends to share the beauty of Cheekwood.

What is your favorite time of year at Cheekwood?

It would be hard to pick a favorite season, since all seasons have such fun events. We love the daffodils of spring, the pumpkins of fall, the Christmas lights in winter, and all the concerts with food trucks that summer has to offer. So, I would have to answer all four seasons!

Which gardens, areas, or plants do you enjoy most when visiting Cheekwood, and why?

I love the Blevins Japanese Garden, the tulips and daffodils, but my new love is walking the labyrinth in The Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden, such a nice way to be silent, hold space for yourself, and meditate.

Do you have a favorite piece of art at Cheekwood or a favorite art exhibition Cheekwood has hosted? If so, what is it and what did you like about it?

I feel so fortunate to have enjoyed all the amazing exhibits that you continue to bring to Cheekwood! Chihuly, Bruce Munro, Jaume Plensa, Art Hop, Cracking Art, Art Bark, Carmen Herrera, and of course all the permanent and changing installations inside the Cheekwood mansion. I try to attend Otsukimi, the annual Japanese Moon Viewing festival, and learn the art of Japanese calligraphy and the beautiful dance of the culture. My personal favorite piece of art is The Glass Bridge by American, Iran-born artist, Siah Armajani. So magical to walk through it.

Eileen’s fondness for Cheekwood inspires her to share her experiences with her daughter. Together, they have created decades of notable moments with more to come. We continued our conversation with a request for Eileen to share one of her favorite memories involving Cheekwood; and we asked a few more questions.

Some of my favorite memories of Cheekwood are sharing all the special times with my daughter, Nicole. Nicole first started coming to Cheekwood as a toddler and still enjoys the gardens and the museum at 31 years of age. We attend the Christmas lights every year in awe, we enjoy the pumpkin houses, and of course all the dog special events. Every year, I have my standing date of a Golden Doodle named Sully, who loves to walk the grounds and sit to the sounds of music in the air.

Cheekwood offers many programs and activities that our members really enjoy. What are some that you or your family have especially enjoyed, and why?

My personal favorites are the Wellness Classes. To do yoga in the garden, sound bath in the Japanese Gardens and Tai Chi. Although Nicole has grown up, the children’s summer camps are wonderful. Many years ago, I taught art classes for the young children in the stable area. When Nicole was in grade school, she celebrated her birthday with a ceramic birthday party in the stables.

How would you encourage others to become Cheekwood members?

I chat up Cheekwood all the time, and my exuberance has led to several friends signing up for a membership. Word of mouth has always worked for me. As you can see, Cheekwood is my second home!

Member Spotlight: Anneriet Aerts

Anneriet Aerts is an enthusiastic Cheekwood member who joined in 2021. She has lived in the Nashville area for two years, and visited 56 state parks in Tennessee during her first year here! She enjoys traveling, hiking, and taking care of her two grandsons. She believes Cheekwood is important because it gives families the chance to reconnect in nature. Anneriet graciously agreed to answer some questions and tell her Cheekwood story.

What inspired you to become a Cheekwood member?

During my first visit, I thoroughly enjoyed the nature and garden areas of Cheekwood, and signed up to become a member that day!

I enjoy coming to Cheekwood so very much, especially when my other grandson from Florida comes to visit me, sometimes for weeks at a time and we go to Cheekwood at least once a week during that time.

Which gardens, areas, or plants do you most enjoy when visiting Cheekwood, and why?

Since I usually visit with my grandchildren, we spend most of our time in the Children's Garden. The kids never tire of the obstacle course and rope bridge, water features, and the playhouse. We have also been active participants in the reading and craft times that are hosted. The train area is another favorite spot with its extensive tracks and hidden coves to explore. The beautiful landscaping and seasonal flowers in all of these areas make it a pleasant experience for all.

Anneriet makes frequent use of her membership, coming to visit the gardens in all seasons. She shared some lovely experiences she’s had at Cheekwood throughout the year.

What is your favorite time of year at Cheekwood?

While I enjoy the variety and new features that come with each season, Cheekwood harvest and the pumpkin decorations are my favorite.

What is one of your favorite memories involving Cheekwood?

The holiday lights together with my family. I upgraded my membership so I was able to bring my whole family without having to pay a lot more. It was cold and because of that we enjoyed the hot chocolate in the cafe.

Cheekwood offers many programs and activities that our members really enjoy. What are some that you or your family have especially enjoyed, and why?

We enjoy Cheekwood in Bloom every spring (especially the tulips since we are from the Netherlands), the orchid display in the mansion, and children's story time and crafts.

Cheekwood staff are always happy to see Anneriet on the property. A member of Cheekwood’s Guest Services team noticed that Anneriet extends her kindness towards others to enhance their experience at Cheekwood, and says that her compassion is not only noteworthy as a member, but also as a human being.

How would you encourage others to become Cheekwood members?

I frequently encourage other people to sign up for Cheekwood memberships. As you can see in the pictures, Cheekwood is to be enjoyed by young and old alike, in every season!

We’re lucky to have wonderful members like Anneriet that help to make Cheekwood the special place it is!

Member Spotlight: Geniese Gilman

Geniese and Tom Gilman got married in 1978 and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, they have raised their nine children here and visited Cheekwood numerous times along the way. Tom is a history teacher, and Geniese is a nanny, mother, and grandmother, who often meet each other for picnic lunches when they have time throughout their days. They were introduced to Cheekwood by a photographer in July of 1985 and since then Cheekwood has been the backdrop to countless photos including an anniversary portrait, one of their daughter’s wedding portraits, one of their nephew’s proposals, birth announcements, Christmas cards, and innumerable photos of their nine grandchildren. When Geniese searched, “Cheekwood” in her phone’s photo album she got a result of 1,500, and that does not even begin to cover the older photos that are not on her phone.

What have you enjoyed the most about your Member experience?

The memories I have created at Cheekwood with family and friends over the years have been delightful. I have even made friends with some staff members, too, like Shannon Pruitt. Shannon is now a Horticulturist at Cheekwood, but we first met in the gardens on March 30, 2017. I was at Cheekwood alone with my sketchbook reminiscing about a loved one who had passed away the year before. Shannon noticed that I was crying, and she came over to ask me if I was okay. From that day I have come to know
Shannon as one of the most tender and kind souls, and I enjoy seeing her working in the gardens on my visits.

What is your favorite garden, area, or plant at Cheekwood and why?

I love the Tulips – I went to see them at least eight times earlier this year in 2022. I love to take pictures of everything, but especially the Tulips. My Dad was a Naval photographer during World War II and later had a dark room in our house while she was growing up. He gifted me my first camera with a flash bulb before my field trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Knowing that my first photograph I ever took was of flowers makes me want to continue doing that even more. One of my favorite Cheekwood in Bloom years was when there were different variations of pink tulips planted beside the creek flowing down from the Historic Mansion & Museum.

Other favorite areas of mine are the TRAINS! exhibit, I love them almost as much as my grandchildren do. My older grandchildren enjoy reading The Little Engine that Could on the Storybook Trail to my younger grandchildren. I enjoy early morning strolls through the Blevin’s Japanese Garden and the Ann & Monroe Carell Jr. Family Sculpture Trail where I sing and hum to myself when no one else is around. Cheekwood is my favorite place to take my grandchildren and take pictures of them and the flowers.

Do you have a favorite art piece at Cheekwood, or, if not, a favorite exhibition that Cheekwood has hosted? Is there a reason you like it?

My family loved Sean Kenney’s Nature POP! Made with LEGO Bricks exhibit in 2021 and the Storybook Houses! in 2019. A family favorite house of ours was the Hill Top Garden, inspired by Beatrix Potter and The Tale of Peter Rabbit. There were so many interactive ways to explore the house and from the bunnies on the fence posts to the window flower baskets the artistic details were wonderful. The accessibility of these exhibits to Members and guests of all ages enhance the enjoyment for children and make the adults feel like they’re kids again, too.

Member Spotlight: Lillian Gilmer

Member Spotlight: Lillian Gilmer

In this Member Spotlight, we chat with a long-time Member about some of her favorite experiences visiting Cheekwood over the years.

Lillian Gilmer and her family have been Members since 1999, but she has been going to Cheekwood since she was a child.  As a Nashville native, Lillian remembers visiting with her family, seeing the beautiful garden displays, exploring the rooms inside the Historic Mansion & Museum, and learning about Cheekwood’s history.

Lillian’s interest in history led her to Davidson College where she majored in Asian studies and spent her free time hiking and whitewater kayaking in the North Carolina mountains. After graduating with honors, Lillian returned to Nashville to teach History and Political Science at Harpeth Hall High School, and later moved to Japan to teach English in Nagoya.  After four years of teaching, Lillian entered law school at Vanderbilt and upon graduation, began practicing real estate law with a local law firm. Ultimately, her interest in both non-profit organizations and real estate law led her to an affordable housing development. Fast forward to today, Lillian is an attorney with Reno & Cavanaugh, PLLC where she continues making a positive impact on her community, working with non-profit agencies, such as Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville as legal counsel for their single-family homeownership program, as well as representing developers who purchase, develop, and rehabilitate affordable multi-family housing through federal low-income housing tax credits and other federal subsidies.

Lillian and her husband, Nate Gilmer, live in Nashville and are soon to be empty nesters as their triplet daughters will go off to college this fall.  Still passionate about spending time outdoors, Lillian enjoys the changing terrain and technical challenges of trail running.

Gilmer-1-1024x599

Lillian, you’ve been a Cheekwood Member for 21 years, what prompted you to join?

Really? Wow…time flies. Well, I’ve been going to Cheekwood since I was a child, so those memories were certainly an influence. I remember our family going at Christmas. The mansion was so beautiful, and I loved all the different Christmas trees. Seeing it through the eyes of a child, it was magical.

Cheekwood has many gardens and trails to explore.  What is your favorite garden area to visit?

I have two favorite garden areas. I really enjoy the Japanese Garden of course. It is so peaceful and reminds me of my time in Japan. The other area where we spent a lot of time is near the Swan Lawn. When our girls were little, we visited Cheekwood every weekend, sometimes both on Saturday and Sunday. We would pack a picnic lunch and load the girls in our triplet stroller to walk to Cheekwood from our house on Page Road. Willy and Elenore were often at the gate, and they greeted us with such enthusiasm every time we arrived at Cheekwood, which was always a nice welcome after pushing our triplet stroller up the hill to the entrance gate. Then, we would always go to our special spot near the Swan Lawn, where we would lay out a blanket, pull out a few toys, some books, and snacks, and just enjoy the afternoon. We were such regulars at Cheekwood that we were featured in a newsletter back in 2004!

gilmer-babies-1536x1152

Cheekwood is open year-round and hosts four seasonal festivals. What is your favorite season or festival?

We always enjoy coming for Cheekwood Harvest and Holiday LIGHTS. We also enjoyed the music at Songwriters Under the Stars. Our favorite festival of all has always been El Día de los Muertos, which we never missed when our children were young. And of course, the Easter Egg hunts!

Do you have a favorite exhibition that Cheekwood has hosted?

The Treehouses were a family favorite. Our girls had a lot of fun with those. Of course, both Chihuly exhibitions were gorgeous. Last year, my husband and I celebrated our 23rd anniversary at Cheekwood. Seeing Chihuly lit up in the evening was so beautiful. It was the perfect “date night”.

Cheekwood offers so many programs and activities that our Members really enjoy. What are some that you or your family has especially enjoyed?

We have always loved all of the art activities at Cheekwood for the children. Before our girls started kindergarten, our nanny would bring them to Cheekwood once a week for art activities. Over the years, our girls went to several summer camps and art workshops.  On weekends during the holiday season, we always came to decorate cookies.

Lillian, thank you for sharing so many wonderful memories about Cheekwood. We have one last question for you.  Why do you think Cheekwood is important – for individuals, families and communities?

Cheekwood is such an amazing resource for Nashville. The ability to enjoy art, nature, and music in one setting is truly a gift, and Cheekwood is one of the few places in Nashville where all can be enjoyed at the same time. Cheekwood offers individuals a place to disappear into a landscape of beautiful green lawns peppered with colorful flowers and art exhibitions for a few hours, or even a day, a place to seek solace and a temporary escape from hectic city life. Cheekwood is also a wonderful playground for families, providing a place where families can take walks, enjoy a picnic, and be entertained for hours without the distraction of technology. Having a resource like Cheekwood is so beneficial to the community because it brings people together to enjoy the very things that are so important in life to our mental well-being (art, nature, and music), and it is these things which people often don’t take time to enjoy due to being over scheduled with obligations. Spending an afternoon at Cheekwood, whether it be alone with your thoughts, picnicking with family, or communing with other Nashvillians over an exhibition or other community event, is sure to be a delightful experience for anyone!

At Cheekwood, our members are at the very heart of what we do. We wanted to highlight a new member and share some of the reasons she enjoys being a member at Cheekwood.

As an Air Force veteran and a Senior Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs headquarters, Gina Jackson is a frequent traveler and Nashville has been a favorite destination. The first time she visited Cheekwood she knew it was a place she wanted to see again and again, so Gina became a member in 2020 even though she lived in Virginia. However, a firm believer in serendipity, Gina has since had the opportunity to move and make Nashville her home permanently!

When Gina’s not handling interviews and media requests in her day job, she serves as a Board member and public relations adviser for the non-profit organization Operation Song – an organization that pairs professional songwriters with Veterans to help them tell their often difficult stories through song. In her spare time Gina loves music, travel and photography and she can often be found wandering the Cheekwood gardens with a camera in hand.

Cheekwood is open year-round and hosts four seasonal festivals. What is your favorite season at Cheekwood and why OR What is your favorite Cheekwood festival and why?

I think it’s tough to beat Cheekwoood in the springtime! It’s a great feeling when the weather finally starts to warm up and you can spend more time outdoors again and the gardens during Cheekwood in Bloom are absolutely breathtaking.

With 13 gardens, The Carell Trail, Historic Mansion & Museum, café, gift shops, and more, there is a lot to explore at Cheekwood. What is your favorite garden or area and why?

That’s a tough choice…but I love the Color Garden because it’s always amazing to see the incredibly colorful mixture of flowers each season and I love the Water Garden area because it’s very serene to just watch/listen to the water flowing down the small falls.

What is your favorite room or area in the Historic Mansion & Museum and Why?

I love the room with the curved staircase and the bell chandelier. Photography is a passion of mine and this room has great lines, curves and angles to photograph…from above looking down and from below looking up. There’s also some great details in the iron work on the staircase…it’s a beautiful area of the house.

Do you have a favorite art piece at Cheekwood, OR a favorite exhibition that Cheekwood has hosted? What about the artwork or exhibition interested you?

I loved the Chihuly exhibit! I’ve always been amazed by his incredible glass work and to see the sculptures displayed in the gardens was absolutely beautiful!

Tell us about a program, activity, class, workshop, or event you enjoyed and what you liked about it.

I really enjoy Holiday LIGHTS at Christmas! It’s a great activity for every age. Walking through the lights with holiday music playing over the speakers is just amazing and it’s great that you can get hot chocolate, adult beverages and make s’mores too! It’s just a really fun thing to do with friends and family around the holidays.

Why do you think Cheekwood is important – for individuals, families, and communities?

Cheekwood is a beautiful place to escape to…away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s not far from downtown Nashville, but once you’re there on the grounds it feels like you’re a world away. These days it seems like every square foot of space around us is being developed, so I’m thankful this beautiful place exists for everyone to enjoy.
