Cheekwood’s latest Pop-Up Gallery features work by acclaimed “outsider” artist Lonnie Holley. The temporary exhibition will feature a collaborative community sculpture created by Holley and students from Nashville School of the Arts.

Cheekwood’s Pop-Up Gallery exhibition coincides with the William Edmondson and Friends: Breaking the Mold exhibition opening September 27 in the Museum of Art. Though Holley was born in 1950, the year before Edmondson died, his art career parallels Edmondson’s. Both self-taught artists got their start carving tombstones, and both are characterized by their spiritual urge to create. Holley is represented in the William Edmondson and Friends exhibition with a metal and wood mixed-media dog sculpture that echoes Edmondson’s larger animal works.
