Nashville’s favorite Summer Camp will be back for 2018. Kids of all ages can come explore our gardens, make masterpieces and more in June and July.

Summer Camp 2018 Descriptions

Each class meets Monday-Friday in one-week increments. Register for each week separately and please note that classes are one hour in length.

2 – 3 YEAR OLDS (Guardian/Child)

Arty Animals (2-3 Guardian/Child)
Have fun creating art projects inspired by animals. Let your imagination run wild and get your hands messy with paint, collage, clay and more! Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

Garden Art (2-3 Guardian/Child)
Time to play in the dirt! In this interactive introduction to the garden, campers will discover soil, seeds, plants and the wonders of the gardens, while creating artworks inspired by nature and the environment. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

Mini Masters (2-3 Guardian/Child)
Meet the Masters! Create your very own masterpiece using paint, collage, clay and more. Make art inspired by a wide variety of master artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe and Jacob Lawrence. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

4 YEAR OLDS

Adventure Cheekwood (4)
Through exciting art projects and stories inspired by the gardens, this special camp will introduce your child to camper-only sessions. Activate your senses on daily nature walks, and experiment with different art-making materials each week. All participants must be fully potty trained and 4 years old. There is no exception to this policy.

5 – 7 YEAR OLDS

Bugs & Blooms (5-7)
In this all-time favorite class, campers will explore Cheekwood’s gardens to find artistic inspiration before venturing into the studio to make their own crafts and creatures. Campers will learn about insects, plants and bugs in the gardens in addition to creating beautiful artwork. This class combines time outdoors, weather permitting, with time in the studio. Please Note: This is an art camp and campers will not handle any insects.

Earth Art (5-7)
Explore Cheekwood’s gardens and forage for found art materials in this environmentally-focused class. While learning about the colors and shapes found in nature, campers will create one of a kind works of art with natural materials from the environment.

Garden Sprouts (5-7)
Discover the many wonders of the natural world! Cultivate a love of nature and gardening through exploration, experiments and art. We will plant seeds and explore their parts, learn about the life cycle of plants, search for garden critters on nature walks, and create art projects inspired by the garden. Campers will spend time outdoors, weather permitting, in addition to time in the classroom.

Art Around the World (5-7)
Take an imaginative trip around the world and discover diverse cultures and new art along the way! Students will create 2D and 3D art projects inspired by each location they visit. Our exciting journey will include Japan, England and Australia, among other.

Introduction to Clay (5-7)
Explore the exciting world of clay! Campers will expand their imagination and practice a variety of hand building and sculpting techniques, as well as learn to glaze and fire their own ceramic work. Please note that students will not work on the pottery wheel during this class.

Mighty Masters (5-7)
Discover master artists and explore their unique art forms! From Van Gogh and Pollock to Warhol and Chihuly, mighty masters will create their own masterpieces using paint, collage, sculpture.

Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine (5-7)
Think green! Explore the world of creative reuse by taking recycled materials and reimagining them. Transform recyclables, toss-ables and art materials into masterpieces with the help of Turnip Green Creative reuse.

Let’s Paint! (5-7)
Explore the fundamentals of paint and learn about different styles of painting using tempera, watercolor and acrylic paint. Practice new techniques, mix colors, experiment, and have a blast expressing yourself!

Studio Sampler (5-7)
Calling all budding artists! Working with a variety of materials, campers will sample a wide array of art processes including painting, collage and sculpture. This camp offers the perfect chance to try out several different mediums and discover new ways to express your unique creativity.

Outdoor Adventure (5-7)
Learn, play and discover the natural world found in Cheekwood’s gardens while cultivating respect and appreciation for the environment. Campers will go on nature walks and bug hunts, forage for natural materials for art projects and engage in outdoor games inspired by the natural world.

8 – 10 YEAR OLDS

Clay Fundamentals (8-10)
Discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel. From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures, campers will do it all. No prior experience is necessary.

Comics & Cartoons (8-10)
Give your drawings a comical spin in this introduction to cartooning techniques and storytelling. Students will gain valuable experience in thumbnail sketching, page layout and character design and development.

Earth Art (8-10)
Explore Cheekwood’s gardens and forage for found art materials in this environmentally-focused class. While learning about the colors and shapes found in nature, campers will create one of a kind works of art with natural materials from the environment.

Eco-Discovery (8-10)
Learn about nature and plant science by exploring and investigating the ecosystems in Cheekwood’s Gardens. Discover the plant and creatures that live in the gardens, ponds and woodlands while creating your own living system to take home.

Painting Techniques (8-10)
Whether you are a practiced artist or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, this class is the perfect opportunity to develop new skills. Experiment with tempera, watercolor and acrylic paint while practicing brushwork, mixing colors, and applying paint on different surfaces.

Printmaking (8-10)
Experience all things printmaking! Create your own monoprints, relief prints and experiment with stamping using a variety of techniques. One day of each session will feature a visit from the printmakers of Hatch Show Print, a historic 137-year-old print shop located in downtown Nashville.

Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Hands on Mechanics (8-10)
Students will learn how to take ordinary materials like cardboard, string and drinking straws and construct mechanical objects. Campers will begin by creating basic projects and will advance to designing their own mechanical pieces by the end of the week.

Textile Fundamentals (8-10)
Explore the basics of the fascinating world of textile art. From creating woven wall hangings to making wearable items, campers will work with a wide range of media including fabrics, paints, dyes, fibers and yarn.

11 & UP

Clay Fundamentals (11 & Up)
Discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel. From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures, campers will do it all. No prior experience is necessary.

The Living Garden (11 & Up)
Explore what makes and keeps our gardens healthy. Dive in depth to learn about our soil, insects and water and the important roles they play in the gardens. Discover the ways that we can be stewards of the garden and help maintain its health.

Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Hands on Mechanics (11 & Up)

Paint pictures with words by crafting imaginative stories and poetry! Surrounded by Cheekwood’s peaceful and inspirational garden and estate, students will explore forming narratives and experimenting with core elements of storytelling like style, structure, and point of view.

Registration

All camp registrations must be done through Cheekwood’s website. Enrollment is limited and programs fill quickly. Early registration is encouraged to ensure space in the camp of your choice. If you encounter problems with online registration, please call 615-353-9827 for assistance.

Please Note: In order to receive a Member discount, you must be a member before registering for summer camp. Visit our membership page to learn more about the wonderful benefits of a Cheekwood membership.

Cancellation Policy

You may cancel your child’s camp registration up to 2 weeks before the first day of that camp. A $35 administrative fee per child per camp will be assessed for all changes and cancellations. Registration changes and/or cancellations cannot be completed online. Please email education@cheekwood.org or call 615-353-9827 to cancel your registration. Camps cancelled less than 2 weeks before the start date are not eligible for refunds. Please note: Cheekwood cannot ‘switch’ classes. If you cancel a class to register for another, the cancellation is considered a separate transaction and the administrative fee will apply. We do not offer refunds for missed days of camp.

Camps cancelled by Cheekwood because of low enrollment will automatically be refunded in full. Cheekwood will notify you no less than 5 days in advance if a class is cancelled and will try to accommodate your child in another camp session.

Waiting List

An online wait list enables parents to add their camper(s) to an electronic wait list when they encounter a camp that is full. Cheekwood Camp Staff will manage the process by contacting parents if spots become available.

Scholarships

Cheekwood is proud to offer a limited number of summer camp scholarships made possible through the generous support of the Siddy Foote Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Please note: In order for Cheekwood to share the camp experience with as many children as possible, Cheekwood offers 50% and 100% scholarships based on the financial need according to the family’s most recent tax return. All requests and information submitted to Cheekwood are confidential and only used to determine financial need.

Age Limits

For all camps, campers must be the proper age on or before the first day of the camper’s registered class in order to enroll. Cheekwood has the right to cancel or switch the session of anyone registered in the wrong age group. If you have questions about moving your child to a different age range, please call 615-353-9827. All campers participating in the 4 year old only camps must be 4 years old and fully potty trained at the time of their camp. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Special Needs

Cheekwood will make every attempt to serve campers who require special attention or consideration. As we are not a special needs camp, there may be some needs that we are unable to meet. We have a policy not to accept campers whose needs are beyond our training or capabilities. If your child has a special need or a life threatening allergy, please contact the Education Department at 615-353-9827 to discuss their needs before registering. We want to prepare the staff and teachers in advance so that we can make your child’s camp experience the best and safest it can be. Camper Aids must be at least 18 years or older.

24-Hour Illness Policy

Your child must remain free of fever or vomiting for 24 hours before returning to camp. The 24 hours begins when your child last vomits or when the fever has broken and remains in a normal range. Cheekwood does not refund missed camp days in the event of illness.
