Summer Camp 2017 Descriptions

Spring One Day Camps at Cheekwood

Classes for 2-3 Year Olds

Each class meets Monday-Friday in one week increments. Register for each week separately and please note that classes are one hour in length.

Arty Animals

Campers will create art projects inspired by stories and images of insects and animals. Children will get their hands dirty with paint, collage, clay and more while creating unique artwork. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

*NEW* Classic Cars at Cheekwood

Campers will draw, paint and create all things classic car! Campers will create art projects inspired by the cars of the 1930s, similar to the ones the Cheek family and the Crawley family of Downton Abbey would have driven. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

*NEW* Garden Art

Time to play in the dirt! In this interactive introduction to the garden, campers will discover soil, seeds, plants and the many wonders of the natural world. We will draw, paint and create inspired by nature’s beauty. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor.

Mini Masters

Campers will learn about a variety of artists and art forms, from European and American masters to Modern and Contemporary movements. Children will get their hands dirty with paint, collage, clay & more. Each Guardian & Child class will also include a special Moving with Music session during the week, when campers will enjoy an active program led by a guest instructor

Classes for 4 Year Olds

Adventure Cheekwood

This special camp will introduce your child to camper-only sessions with art projects, stories, activities in the gardens, nature walks, and more. All participants must be fully potty trained and 4 years old. There is no exception to this policy.

Classes for 5-7 Year Olds

Bugs & Blooms

In this all-time favorite class, campers will explore Cheekwood’s gardens to find artistic inspiration before venturing into the studio to make their own crafts and creatures. Campers will learn about insects, plants and bugs in the gardens in addition to creating beautiful artwork. This class combines time outdoors, weather permitting, with time in the studio. Please Note: This is an art camp and campers will not handle any insects.

Cheekwood Fit

Part of the Let’s Move! initiative, this energizing class takes campers out of the classroom and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle. This camp will involve time spent exploring Cheekwood’s gardens and engaging in physical activities such as yoga, tai chi, and outdoor games, weather permitting, as well as indoor wellness activities.

*NEW* Comics & Cartoons

Our popular drawing class is now available for 5-7 year olds! Students will learn how to incorporate new drawing techniques inspired by their favorite characters into their very own comics and cartoons.

*NEW* Earth Art

Campers will explore Cheekwood’s gardens and forage for their own materials in this unique class. While learning about the colors and shapes found in nature, campers will create beautiful works of art with materials from the local environment.

Garden Sprouts

Time to play in the dirt! In this interactive introduction to the garden, campers will discover soil, seeds, the plant life cycle and the many wonders of the natural world. Through hands-on activities, campers will create garden art, conduct science experiments and cultivate a love of nature and gardening. Campers will spend time outdoors, weather permitting, in addition to time in the classroom.

International Art

Take a trip around the world! From Cheekwood’s Japanese garden to the Cheek mansion’s English design, campers will expand their knowledge of different cultures while creating works of art and learning basic foreign language vocabulary.

*NEW* Introduction to Clay

Your child will learn a variety of different hand building techniques in this new camp. With a full week of hands-on experience, your child will visit the clay studio, and learn the processes of glazing and firing ceramic work. Please note that students will not work on the pottery wheel during this class.

Mighty Masters

Campers will learn about a variety of artists and their art forms, from Van Gogh and Picasso to Warhol and Chihuly. Children will work with paint, collage, sculpture and more as they recreate the masters.

*NEW* Mixed Media with Turnip Green Creative Reuse

In this camp, students will create original works of art using a variety of sustainable and reuse materials and techniques.  Participants will explore the exciting world of creative reuse and use found objects, along with recycled materials that have been diverted from local landfills, to produce beautiful works of art.

Painting Fundamentals

Campers will explore numerous paint types, including tempera, watercolor and acrylic paint while learning the basics of primary and secondary colors. Students will work on their brushwork, mix colors, and experiment with ways to apply paint on different surfaces.

Studio Fundamentals

Campers will work with a variety of materials as they discover a wide array of studio arts. Exploring both 2D and 3D processes, projects will include drawing, painting, sculpting and working with clay. This camp encourages students to discover fun new ways of expressing their creativity.

Classes for 8-10 Year Olds

Cheekwood Fit 

Part of the Let’s Move! initiative, this energizing class takes campers out of the classroom and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle. This camp will involve time spent exploring Cheekwood’s gardens and engaging in physical activities such as yoga, tai chi, and outdoor games, weather permitting, as well as indoor wellness activities.

Campers will explore the cars of the 1930s to learn about the artistry of exterior and interior design, the science of engines, and a basic history of moving vehicles. With the help of the Lane Motor Museum, students dive into the world of automobile manufacturing.

Clay Fundamentals 

Campers will discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel.  From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures, campers will do it all!  No prior experience is necessary.

Comics & Cartoons

Give your drawings a comical spin, explore concepts and characters, and create your own comics and cartoons. Students will learn how to incorporate the basics of drawing into these art forms through storyboards, self-portraits, anime, and more.

*NEW* Dressing Downton TM Fashion

Explore the fashion of the 1930s by studying the clothing and accessories of Downton Abbey. Campers will have access to the blockbuster exhibition to use as inspiration for creating their own stunning pieces to take home.

*NEW* Dressing Downton TM Jewelry Making

Explore the intricate designs that characterized the jewelry worn by the members of the Crawley family in Downton Abbey. Each session will be led by local craftsman who will help campers create their own Downton-inspired jewelry.

*NEW* Earth Art

International Art

Outdoor Adventure 

This unique camp is designed to foster respect and appreciation for the environment and to inspire a sense of wonder through direct experiences with the natural world. Campers will enjoy hands-on activities, insect and plant encounters, nature hikes, outdoor games, stories and craft projects. Our art studios and botanical garden will provide beautiful, spacious areas for learning, play and discovery!

Painting Fundamentals

*NEW* Printmaking Fundamentals 

Students in this class will experience all things printmaking, from creating their own monoprints and carving stamps to learning about layout and design. One day of each session will feature a visit from the printmakers of Hatch Show Print, a historic 137-year-old print shop located in downtown Nashville.

*NEW* Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Dimensional Design 

Students will use fabrication tools and drawing skills to create functional objects from paper and plastic using folding, cutting and construction techniques. Campers will begin to think about how the materials they use can affect the objects they create.

 *NEW* Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Hands on Mechanics 

Students will learn how to take ordinary materials like cardboard, string and drinking straws and construct mechanical objects. Campers will begin by creating basic projects and will advance to designing their own mechanical pieces by the end of the week.

Students will create their own mixed media sketchbook as a document of their personal stories, experiences, and thoughts. Campers will enjoy Cheekwood’s beautiful grounds and express themselves through their artwork. Techniques addressed will be pen and ink drawing, watercolor painting, collage, photo transfer, and drawing on-site at Cheekwood.

*NEW* Dressing DowntonTM Jewelry Making

Explore the intricate designs that characterized the jewelry worn by the members of the Crawley family in Downton Abbey. Each session will be led by local craftsman who will help campers create their own Downton-inspired jewelry.

*NEW* Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Basic Electronics & Microcontrollers

Campers will use basic electronic components and an Arduino microcontroller to create objects that sense the world around them by using temperature, LED lights, and motors. Once the objects are built, campers will interact with them to refine and adapt their designs.

*NEW* Maker Camp with Make Nashville: Sensing & Nature

Get ready to look at nature in a new way. Students will learn about different types of sensing mechanisms, such as slow motion video, time lapse, and infragram (cameras that detect photosynthesis), before getting hands-on with ultrasonic bat detectors and vibration sensors attached to plants used to hear insects crawling around and communicating. Students will experiment with tools before observing, collecting and analyzing data.

Outdoor Adventure

This camp is designed to foster respect and appreciation for the environment and to inspire a sense of wonder through direct experiences with the natural world. Campers will enjoy hands-on activities, insect and plant encounters, nature hikes, outdoor games and craft projects. Our art studios and botanical garden will provide beautiful, spacious areas for learning, play and discovery!

Using tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paints, campers will learn about different styles of painting while practicing advanced techniques. Campers will enjoy painting on a variety of different surfaces in addition to traditional canvas.

*NEW* Printmaking Fundamentals 

Students in this class will experience all things printmaking, from creating their own monoprints and carving stamps to learning about layout and design. One day of the session will feature a visit from the printmakers of Hatch Show Print, a historic 137-year-old print shop located in downtown Nashville.

*NEW* Radio Live

In this special class campers will learn the theatric tricks of the radio world by writing, directing, and performing their own radio drama. The camp will culminate in a live performance of the drama during Cheekwood’s Saturday Dressing Downton TM programing. Each student will receive a recording of the live performance.

*NEW* Textile Fundamentals

This class will explore the basics of everything involving textile art. Form creating their own wall art to making their own wearable items campers will work with a wide range of media including fabrics, paints, dyes, fibers and yarn.
