Published: 10/24/2016

On Saturday, October 28, we will celebrate our 17th annual El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. This is one of the most important celebrations in Mexico and Latin America. The festivals, known for their colorful decorations, energetic music and elaborate displays, demonstrate the culture’s strong sense of love and respect for ancestors while celebrating the continuance of life.

Each year, Cheekwood brings the traditions of Mexico and Latin America to Nashville with a festival that includes traditional music and dance, vibrant art activities and authentic cuisine. Visitors will learn about the culture of their Latin American neighbors while exploring beautiful altar displays and shopping in the marketplace.

Art Activities
Traditional art activities will be offered including Papel Picado, Paper Marigolds, Calaveras Masks, Sugar Skulls and Posada Prints

11th Annual Tapete Display & Competition
What is tapete? Tapete is the Spanish word for carpet. Usually made with colored sand, these “carpets” are a tradition for El Día de los Muertos because, like life, they are temporary. At Cheekwood, participants will use chalk, a similar temporary medium, to create the large-scale colorful designs to honor the deceased. Experience the brilliance of these custom designs before they wash away!

Altars
One of the most important aspects of El Día de los Muertos is the creation of a memorial altar for the departed, known as an ofrenda. All across Mexico and beyond, families honor their ancestors by creating altars decorated with items that the deceased enjoyed in life. Learn more about this tradition as you tour the creative ofrendas designed by local groups and organizations.
