Los Murales Display Application

Murals depicting the Day of the Dead have a strong history throughout Latin America, highlighted by the works of Diego Rivera and José Guadalupe Posada, the creator of the iconic Catrina figure. Finding inspiration in these artists, students in grades sixth to twelfth will create 2-D murals on canvas that may portray any aspect of El Día de los Muertos. Los Murales will be completed off site and will be returned to Cheekwood and hung in the Frist Learning Center. Help your students develop cultural awareness, encourage class unity and participation, and display the talent and enthusiasm of your students to over 4,000 event visitors through this interactive and fun competition!

Each participating group will receive up to 10 tickets to attend the El Día de los Muertos Festival.

Participation Timeline

Participation in Los Murales is limited

Sunday, August 30 | Application due
Friday, September 4th | Applicants will be notified of their acceptance
September 9th-11th, 2026 | Canvas pickup
- Cheekwood will provide the canvas that each mural must be completed on.
Friday, October 16th | Completed canvas must be returned

Application Review Process

Applications are accepted based on the following criteria:

Application received before the deadline.
Previous history with Cheekwood’s El Día de los Muertos event.
The goal of quality, diversity, variety, and limited duplication.
Applicants will be notified of their acceptance on or before Friday, September 4th, 2026.
